DIY Farmhouse-Inspired Dollar Tree Decor

Anyone else love a good trip to the dollar store? I find myself going there at least every other weekend to see what new things are in. The seasonal stuff is always so much fun. Also, you can never beat little decor trinkets for $1. (Not that I need any more of that around my apartment…)

So instead of just accumulating more and more trinkets, this time I decided to use the Dollar Tree as my craft store.

I’ve been really into modern, farmhouse-inspired decor. I think the rustic in combination with clean whites just feels homey, yet sophisticated. So I thought why not give a few DIYs a try.

I made a basket tray, a letter board sign, and also attempted a few glassware DIYs (which… kinda failed, but thought I’d still include them.)

The video below gives you the tutorials! Then I listed out the supplies in the post below!

Rope Basket Tray

Supplies:

  • 4-5 packs of Dollar Tree nautical rope

  • A roll of twine (only needed if you only purchase 4 packs of rope!)

  • Hot glue

  • Scissors

  • Optional: Dollar Tree pizza pan to help you with the size of the basket

Instructions:

  1. To form the bottom, begin coiling the rope using hot glue, wrapping until you get your desired base-size. (That’s what I used the pizza pan for!)

  2. Begin forming the sides by wrapping and gluing the rope around the last bottom coil. Continue to wrap until the basket is about 4-5 coils high.

  3. To make the handles, either cut off rope and glue two loops to the side. OR make 2 thick braids out of the twine to use as handles (see video).

Dollar Tree glass jar ideas (sorta a DIY fail… oops)

Sea glass bottle supplies:

  • Dollar Tree glass bottle

  • Sea foam green acrylic paint

  • Matte Mod Podge

  • Paint brush

Instructions:

  1. Mix the acrylic paint and Mod Podge.

  2. Paint it evenly onto the glass bottle.

  3. Set it aside to dry.

  4. Coat the bottle in a final layer of the matte Mod Podge and allow to fully dry before handling.

White jar supplies:

  • Dollar Tree glass jar

  • White chalk paint

  • Black chalk paint

  • Chalk

  • Sandpaper

  • Paint brush

Instructions:

  1. Paint the glass jar in a thick coat of white chalk paint. Allow that to completely dry.

  2. Next, use some sandpaper to rub some of the paint off the jar to give it a rustic finish.

  3. Then use black chalk paint to paint on the label. Let that dry.

  4. Finally, you can use chalk to write on whatever the jar’s content contains.

DIY letter board sign with removable letters

Supplies:

  • Dollar Tree seasonal decor sign

  • Large Dollar Tree popsicle sticks

  • Small Dollar Tree popsicle sticks

  • 3 pieces of the thinest balsa wood you can find at the craft store

  • White chalk paint

  • Black sticker letters

  • Optional: wood stain

  • Scissors

  • Hot glue

  • Paint brushes

Instructions:

  1. Paint the back of the decor sign and your balsa wood with a nice coat of white chalk paint. Let that dry.

  2. Optional step: You can keep the natural wood color of the large popsicle sticks, but I decided to give them a coat of wood stain. Allow the stain to completely dry before continuing.

  3. Determine the spacing of the smaller popsicle sticks by placing and measuring their placement on the sign.

  4. Glue down the small sticks with hot glue.

  5. I then used scissors to trim the larger popsicle sticks to size before centering them and gluing them on top of the smaller sticks.

  6. Next, measure and cut your balsa wood to make your letter pieces. I did mine 2 inches wide by just a little less than 3 inches tall (sorry… I guesstimated!). Ultimately, I ended up trimming the width of the letters down so I could fit more letters across on the board.

  7. Finally, stick on your letter stickers.

  8. Now you can display your letter board with whatever phrases you like and that fit!
